The annual BASS festival (British Arts and Street Sounds) it is the UK’s only month long celebration of Black Music and Art.

The theme for this year’s festival is Jamaica, which coincides with the country’s celebration of 50 years of independence and the arrival of the Jamaican Olympic team to train in Birmingham.

Birmingham has over 70,000 residents from Jamaica – the second largest community in the UK – and is also known as Reggae City with artists like Steel Pulse, UB40, Apache Indian, Bitty McLean and Pato Banton all having roots here. UB40 even recorded the music video for their single Red Red Wine in the Eagle and Tun in Digbeth.

BASS Festival is produced by Digbeth-based Punch, which started out as a record store in 1997. For more information on BASS Festival and line-up announcements visit www.punch-records.co.uk.
