Mapping the Landscape

“Mapping the Landscape” is a solo exhibition by artist Paul Hirst, who creating work on an art residency at the Bond in Digbeth. Please see the flyer for more information.

The exhibition will be a showcase of drawings, prints, photography and paintings with over 40 pieces of new work created during his residency.

Open Mic Night @ Suki10c

When: Friday, 22nd June
Where: Suki10c, Meriden Street, Digbeth

Digbeth’s newest live music and arts venue, Suki10c (said ‘sucki it and see’) will be hosting their first open mic night tomorrow.

Entry is free, so why not go along to see what the fuss is all about while enjoying an evening’s entertainment with singer/songwriters, bands, poets and a circus performer too!

Warwick Bar Summer Fete

Digbeth Bike Ride and Walk

When: Tuesday 26th June

Where: Meet at the Spotted Dog at 17:30

Due to the success of last year’s cycle ride from the Spotted Dog to the Black Eagle in Hockley, Digbeth resident Val Woodward has kindly agreed to run another outing in 2012!

The ride will take the same route as last year, along the scenic canal network. Val is qualified to run bike trips, and has organised a number bicycles for those who do not currently own one to use. Please get in touch at to enquire about borrowing a bike for this trip.

The group is aiming to be back in Digbeth before dark. If you will be joining the ride, please email, or simply join the Facebook event.

For those more comfortable on two feet rather than two wheels, there will also be a walk around Digbeth organised for the 28th June. Again leaving at 17:30 from the Spotted Dog pub, the walk will take in the sights and sounds of Digbeth, returning to the Spotted Dog before dark.

Danielle Marie @ The Bay Leaf

Birmingham based singer/songwriter Danielle Marie will be playing at the Bay Leaf in June:

Born and raised in Manchester UK, Danielle began her singing career at the age of 14. During a holiday in Jamaica 1996, it was the different culture and way of living that inspired her to start writing songs about what she had seen and experienced.

A variety of artists including; Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige, Alicia Keyes, Donnell Jones and many, many more, have been a great source of inspiration for Danielle.

Tickets are £20, including a three course meal. Danielle’s single, “Don’t Stop”, is available to download now from iTunes.

Digbeth/Highgate Football Club

When: Saturday 16th June, 10:00 until 14:00
Where: Multi Use Games Area on Conybere Street, Highgate, B12 OYJ

Residents of Digbeth and Highgate were recently made aware of a day of sporting activities aimed at children, organised by West Midlands Police. This Saturday will be the first day of the scheme, which sets to continue weekly throughout the summer.

Digbeth Residents Line the Streets!

You cannot have failed to notice that the Olympic torch is currently making its way around the UK on an 8,000 mile journey.

On Sunday 1st July, the torch will pass through our very own Digbeth High Street (see the route map on the London 2012 website here), and Digbeth Residents Association (DRA) is planning to bring residents and supporters together to line the route.

SSCS Fundraiser @ The Wagon and Horses

This coming Saturday sees a live ska, dub, folk, gypsy, punk music event at the Wagon and Horses, to raise awareness and funds for the Sea Shepherds Conservation Society. The acts include:

Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit making, marine wildlife conservation organisation. Its mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

The Reading Room @ Grand Union

Where: Grand Union, 19 Minerva Works, Fazeley Street, B5 5RS

The Reading Room is a Berlin-based project founded by artisits Ciarán Walsh and Dominique Hurth. The exhibition continues until the 23rd June 2012.

Johnny 2 Bad

Local band UB40 filmed the video for Red Red Wine in the Eagle & Tun in Digbeth, so it’s fitting that another Digbeth venue is hosting a UB40 tribute act this Saturday!

The Irish Centre presents Johnny 2 Bad on Saturday 8th June, followed by an aftershow party with DJ Mikey B.
