When: Thursday 21st February, 18:30-20:00
Where: The Dome, Thinktank, Millennium Point
Tickets available online

This week’s Dome Club is a special edition event, featuring all five UK fulldome dance films made to date. Fulldome dance is choreographed especially for a 360 degree screen, and was invented in 2007 by local dance artists working with the Thinktank digital dome in Digbeth.

The programme includes The Sublime (5min) by a dance group in Wales, who were inspired by the ‘Digbeth dance’ and went on to win the award for Innovation at last year’s international Domefest festival in the USA. In fact, the entire dance group from Wales will be attending Dome Club tomorrow. The evening will end with a screening of Written on the Body (9min) – the world’s first ever fulldome dance film created in Digbeth.

St Patrick’s Parade Float Workshop

When: Saturday 23rd February, 12:00-16:00
Where: 22 Green Street, Digbeth (opposite the Peugeot garage car park)

The St Patrick’s Day Festival will return to Digbeth very soon! In preparation, the festival organisers have organised float workshops to help inspire the creations participating in the parade:

For anyone entering this years St Patrick’s Parade why not come along this Saturday Feb 23rd at midday to our next float workshop?

Hosted by Gary Jones, this is an exceptional way to create a great visual impact at ridiculously low cost. Gary makes it so simple that you do not need a creative bone in your body – just a willingness to give up a bit of time and learn how to work a pair of scissors.

If you are unsure how it could help you, or if it could help you at all, call us first on 07919 563 195.

Kind regards,
St Patrick’s Organising Committee

DRA is looking forward to seeing the fabulous creations in this year’s parade – get ready to get your float on!

Flatpack Palais

The seventh Flatpack Festival takes place from 21-31 March 2013, spreading across two weekends for the first time ever. The Festival’s crowd funding campaign to pay for its 2013 festival hub was a complete success, having raised £7,734, 110% of its target.

As a result, the Custard Factory’s Old Library will be transformed into the Flatpack Palais in March, becoming the beating heart of the festival, where people can meet, kick back with a piece of cake, pick up a brochure or watch a film.

The Palais will have its grand opening on the evening of Thursday 28th March, and will be open until Sunday the 31st March. As well as an information point and a place for festival-goers to network, this year the Flatpack Palais will host parties, live music, workshops and an exhibition of pioneering screen-printed posters by Birmingham Arts Lab dating from the 60s and 70s.

The full festival programme is available on the Flatpack website. If you’d like to get involved in the Festival a little bit more, the organisers are still on the look out for volunteers; click here to find out more.

Filum Night – Monday 18th February

When: Monday 18th February, 19:30 onwards
Where: The Spotted Dog, Warwick Street, Digbeth

Stuck for something to do on Monday night? Never fear, Filum Night is back!

As ever, your host and landlord John will be on hand with free ‘tay n buns’ (that’s tea and cream cakes to the uninitiated!) and his wicked sense of humour.

Tonight’s filum is the comedy:

The Craic (1999)
Two Irish actors flee from 1988 Belfast after a violent confrontation with a leader of the IRA and illegally enter Australia. Seeking acting work, the two fear immigration officers. McKeown happens to get selected as the bachelor on a TV dating game and wins a trip to Queensland just as the pair’s apartment is raided by immigration. McKee escapes just in time and joins his friend. Meanwhile, the IRA leader is sent to Australia in a witness protection programme after he gives up some of his former colleagues. The two then spend the remainder of the movie being pursued by the immigration officers and the vengeful IRA head.

Enjoy!

Later this month Spot*light will host a night of celebration, including the launch of the short film Smile Gambia, live music, guest speakers, and a set from award-winning DJ E Double D.

One day Selina woke up and felt like giving back. To be the change she wanted to see. So during November 2012 she put out posts on Facebook asking for donations for children Gambia. The response was phenomenal she collected hundreds of donations – pens, pencils, books, toothbrushes, and clothes.

Struggling with the super big and super heavy suitcase she flew to Gambia in December 2012. The items wihere distrubted to struggling children in resource poor villages. They smiled. It was a life changing experience. She did it with no funding. Just a big heart.
