The year of the Snake

When: Sunday 10th February – TODAY! – 11:30-17:30
Where: Arcadian Centre, Hurst Street

As a multicultural city, Birmingham always celebrates Chinese New Year in style. Although the venue is the Arcadian Centre, you can bet your last fortune cookie that we’ll be hearing the fun (and fireworks) from Digbeth!

To celebrate the Year of the Snake, there will be an afternoon of free activities including dragon dances, acrobatic performances and kung fu demonstrations. There will also be traditional firecrackers, market stalls, food and children’s rides.

For more information, click here to visit the website, or simply pop down to China Town.

Birmingham Beer Bash

When: Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July 2013
Where: The Bond Company, Fazeley Street, Digbeth

Although unconfirmed, simply due to the success of Birmingham CAMRA’s Birmingham Beer Festival, it’s unlikely that the event will return to Digbeth in 2013.

However, never fear real ale lovers, as the Birmingham Beer Bash will be coming to the Bond Company on Fazeley Street in the summer!

Aiming to bring “the best of craft beer to the city of Birmingham”, the Birmingham Beer Bash looks to be an unmissable event.

We will keep our readers informed of any developments and further announcements closer to the date, but in the meantime, you can find the event on Facebook and Twitter to keep your taste buds suitably whetted.

The St Patrick’s Day Festival will return to Digbeth very soon! In preparation, the festival organisers have organised float workshops to help inspire the creations participating in the parade:

We are organising two float workshops with Garry Jones from ‘Off Your Trolley’, to share tips on how you can dress your float to maximum effect for minimum cost.

Whether you have a walking group, a vehicular float, or another means of getting around the route, these workshops are entirely free and will prove invaluable to those that can attend.

The first workshop will be next Saturday 9th February, with the second taking place on Saturday 23rd February. All are welcome!

Kind regards,
St Patrick’s Organising Committee

Digbeth Residents Association is looking forward to seeing the fabulous creations in this year’s parade – get ready to get your float on!

Paragon for sale

The Grade II-listed Paragon Hotel on Alcester Street in Digbeth has been put on the market for a cool £6 million.

The hotel has 13 function rooms and 250 bedrooms and was originally built in the early 20th century for Irish migrants. The Paragon was a hostel for many years and was only converted into a hotel in the 1990s.

Dhillon Hotels, who bought the building in 2006, called in administrators from BDO after succumbing to “difficult trading conditions”. (Source: Birmingham Mail)

Here’s hoping that a buyer is found soon.
