Digbeth Echoes

This summer will see a new exhibition in the Community Gallery at Birmingham Museum. Echoes is due to open on 20th May and run until 19th August 2013.

The bands we heard. The pubs we drank in. The smell of metal in the air. Step into the memories of people who lived, worked and played in Digbeth and Highgate in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. History with the paint still wet.

This exhibition is part of the wider Friction Arts Echoes project, funded by the HLF. The project is working with people in Digbeth and Highgate to uncover, preserve and celebrate the diverse recent history of these areas. Click here to learn more about the project or to get involved.

Rest assured that we will keep our readers updated about this exhibition in the New Year.

Rave review for the Karczma

Jay Rayner, food critic for the Observer, regular on Masterchef, and presenter of Radio 4′s The Kitchen Cabinet, recently visited Digbeth.

While here, he sampled the atmosphere of Fazeley Studios and the culinary delights of The Karczma Polish restaurant on Bordesley Street. Naturally, Jay had quite a bit to say about The Karczma…

There is something very special going on here: a true instinct to feed, a massive generosity of spirit, and an outstanding love affair with the noble pig. This is Polish food the way you want it: deep, rich, soothing, hearty. It is one long hug on a plate.

We’ve said the Karczma is a great alternative restaurant right on our doorstep here in Digbeth. But Jay’s verdict? “Go there.” We don’t need to be told twice!

You can read the full review online here, or click here to book a table to see what all the fuss is about yourself.

Smacznego!

Flatpack Festival – save the date

When: 21st-31st March 2013
Where: venues across Birmingham
Full programme to be announced in February

Flatpack Festival returns to Digbeth in 2013, spreading across two weekends for the very first time. Festival-goers can expect live scores, late night parties and cycle-powered screenings; events are just as likely to be found in warehouses and churches as more traditional venues like the century-old Electric Cinema.

The Flatpack Palais is the festival’s heart, a place to meet people, eat cake, pick up a brochure and sample the programme. In 2013 it will be located in the Old Library at Digbeth’s Custard Factory, a Victorian building which started life as the Deritend Free Library. Flatpack will be collaborating with students from Birmingham City University’s School of Architecture to transform it into a screening space and social hub.

Flatpack needs your help in order to achieve this. Rewards for donators include a mention in the festival brochure, to a 10 year pass to all future festival events! Click here for more information and to donate.

Roll on 2013!

Daniel in Birmingham

Daniel O’Donnell visited Birmingham back in June to launch the Irish in Birmingham Direct Giving Scheme at the Irish Centre Birmingham on Digbeth High Street.

Following a visit to the Irish in Birmingham offices on Alcester Street, and a visit to St Anne’s Parish Centre, Daniel wowed the crowd at the Irish Centre Birmingham by performing a number of his songs (see the cheeky video below). Daniel then took the opportunity to meet every member of the audience before speaking about the Direct Giving Scheme, and taking part in a question and answer session.

Daniel is patron of Irish in Birmingham. As it is the season of giving, if you would like more details of the scheme, please click here to get in touch with Irish in Birmingham.

PROVIDE Cinema presents BOMB IT

When: Tuesday 18th December, 19:00 onwards
Where: Custard Factory Theatre, Custard Factory, Digbeth
Advance tickets £5 from PROVIDE (£4 students), tickets also available online and on the door for £6

After the poise and grace of Bill Cunningham New York, PROVIDE Cinema decides it’s time to rough things up a bit:

Through interviews and guerilla footage of graffiti writers in action on five continents, BOMB IT tells the story of graffiti from its origins in prehistoric cave paintings, to its notorious explosion in New York City during the 70s and 80s, and follows the flames as they paint the globe.

Featuring old school legends and current favourite, this cutting edge documentary tracks down today’s most innovative and pervasive street artists as they battle for control over the urban visual landscape. You’ll never look at public space the same way again.

Lunch Club at Eastside Projects

Eastside Projects recently held a special edition of their monthly Lunch Club, hosted by artist Kathrin Böhm and her larder of food and drink collected as she travels around the world. Kathrin brought cheeses, meats, vegetarian tarts and schnapps from her home village to Digbeth, and Eastside Projects provided homemade soup and sourdough bread made by Loaf Community Bakery in Stirchley.

'M6' by Mike Nelson

The ‘Projects host a regular Lunch Club on the last Friday of the month, and everyone is invited to come along with their packed lunch – hot drinks are provided. It’s a great way to meet new people and share more about what’s happening in and around Digbeth. The Christmas break means there will be no Lunch Club in December; the next one will be on Friday 25th January, 12-1pm, after which Lunch Club will continue throughout 2013. Visit the events diary or sign up to the mailing list for details.

The next exhibition at Eastside Projects, ‘M6′ by Turner Prize nominee Mike Nelson, opens on Friday 11th January, 6-8pm. See the Facebook event page for further information.
