Digbeth Bees

When: Saturday 10 September, 14:00 onwards
Where: Digbeth Community Garden, Shaw’s Passage, Digbeth, B5 5PG

Our bees are endangered, especially in today’s cities. Birmingham FOE recently ran a crowdfunding campaign to install a beehive in the Digbeth Community Garden.

In fantastic news, the campaign was successful! Part of the money raised has paid for the beehives (with bees), and professional bee keeping care from Darren Welcome. The rest of the funds will go towards sending volunteers on beekeeping courses and other necessary equipment which will help to keep the hives sustainable.

A few weeks ago, Darren from Hives and Honey installed the rescued bee hives in the Digbeth Community Garden; local TV station TNT News filmed their arrival. We understand the bees are settling in well and are one of the gentler species of honey bee.

This Saturday, there will be a beehive welcome celebration in the Digbeth Community Garden, allowing you to see the hives and find out more about bee keeping from Darren. Along with the obligatory drinks, there will be locally sourced honey to try too.

Personally, I cannot wait to try some Digbeth in the coming months – it’ll add yet another string to our community’s already overflowing bow!
