Kalaboration is a partnership project between The Drum Arts Centre, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) and RoguePlay Theatre, delivering a programme of visual arts activities until November 2012.

Although, our readers are probably already familiar with Kalaboration‘s work; it is responsible for the knitted pillar covers on Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (pictured). Kalaboration has two exhibitions currently showing at the Custard Factory:

Keith Piper Presents ‘A Short Sprint’
Until 17th August 2012, Custard Factory

‘A Short Sprint’ video installation will treat that relationship as a metaphor to examine the impact and visibility of Jamaican ideas, cultural forms and aesthetics upon the world. The idea of the ‘short sprint’, the explosion of frenetic energy over less than ten incident filled seconds, will itself be viewed in the context of the longer period before the ‘sprint’ begins.

Jaskirt Dhaliwali’s ‘Everyday Olympian’

Drawing inspiration from the Kalaboration overarching themes of the Olympic Games and the anniversary of 50 years of Jamaican independence. The photography exhibition documents people involved in local community sports, be it a 12 year old swimmer or 30 year old boxer. The portrait photographs in this exhibition champion the unseen tapestry of talent and passion in sports that exists and thrives in the West Midlands region.

Dhaliwal visited many regional sports clubs and societies to photograph local athletes from many different disciplines, all aspiring to reach the Olympian goal of ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius (Swifter, Higher, Stronger)’, but not all reaching the lofty heights of representing their country in the Olympic games.
