“Look at the pictures!” In 1989, Senator Jesse Helms used these words to denounced the work of American artist Robert Mapplethorpe. On 22 September, Vivid Projects will be celebrating the artist’s work with an evening of Polaroid popping as part of Scalarama.
The evening kicks off with a Polaroid workshop, where you can work one-on-one with Black Hole Club artists to create your own images using a selection of lighting booths and props inspired by Mapplethorpe’s early work.
Workshops will be followed by an intimate screening of Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures, the acclaimed documentary by directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. Made with unprecedented access to Mapplethorpe’s archives and work, the film lays bare the frank sexuality, intimate relationships and febrile environment that fed his work.
