Le Keux Vintage

In 2007 Lynsey Le Keux organised her own vintage wedding. Finding it hard to source suppliers and accessories she began LeKeux Events as a one stop shop for vintage events and experiences.

After steady expansion, Lynsey now offers pin up photoshoots (a great alternative present), hire of a vintage 1964 Ford Mustang, and The Vintage Salon right here in Digbeth’s Custard Factory, where “your beauty is their duty”. You can even recreate your own vintage look at home with the brand new line of LeKeux Cosmetics.

Le Keux complete over 1,500 make-overs and hundreds of hen, birthday and private parties, photo shoots and bridal services every year. And now, residents of Digbeth can enjoy a 10% discount on hair and make-up services at the salon! Simply book in advance by email, quoting discount code DIGBETHRES.

Droplet

Birmingham regularly features top of the polls for ‘most boring city’, which still staggers me. There are many reasons why Birmingham does not deserve this accolade – Droplet is just but one.

Born in Birmingham, Droplet is a new app hoping to transform the way the world uses money. All you need is an active email address to get going. Top-ups are secure and free of charge, with none of your card details stored (at all). “Droplet Online Ltd” will appear on your bank statement as if you have been to a cash machine, with the money being on your phone instead of in your wallet. As well, as being able to pay for loads of stuff using the app, you can also transfer money in-app to your contacts. See the video above for more information.

After a three-month trial in our fair city, over 1200 users and 50 merchants signed up, including loads in Digbeth:

  • PROVIDE
  • Sneeky Fox
  • Green Eyes Boutique*
  • Get a Grip Studio
  • Gingermegs Vintage
  • Laura Loves
  • Roxy Valetta
  • Shaded Rose
  • Ideal Skateboard Supply
  • Vote Vintage
  • Trunk Junkies
  • Boucher and Bond
  • Capsule
  • Just Chloe
  • Satellite Life Coaching

My sources tell me that Droplet may even be working with Digbeth Festivals Flatpack and Supersonic this year. So who says Birmingham is boring? A mobile money revolution is taking place right here, and of course, Digbeth is jumping straight in.

Don’t be left behind – download the app from the App Store free here. Droplet for Android is coming soon – register here for updates.

* As well as using Droplet to pay, residents can also take advantage of a 10% discount at Green Eyes Boutique. See here for more information.

NHW Crime Briefing – Friday 18th January

Digbeth Residents Association and Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) is committed to working with West Midlands Police (WMP) to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in Digbeth. WMP send daily crime updates to the Digbeth Residents Association NHW, which are being summarised weekly and shared with residents. If you have any comments or would like further information, please comment on this post or email contact@mydigbeth.co.uk

At this time of year, West Midlands Police consult the public over new local policing plans for 2013/14. Click here to take part in the consultation for Digbeth through a short online survey.

Bob Jones, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Nearly three million people live in the West Midlands, and policing must be responsive to this huge diversity. Local people know best the issues facing their area, and I welcome every opportunity for people to have their say.”

Crimes reported in Digbeth over the past week are detailed below. Stay safe Digbeth!

Digbeth’s ‘new’ JFK mural

We have been keeping our readers up to date with the progress of the JFK mural on Floodgate Street.

Save Birmingham Law Centre

Birmingham Law Centre is facing a very bleak future and may soon have to close.

Based at Dolphin House on Coventry Road on the edge of Digbeth, The Law Centre is a charity that provides debt, housing, employment, community care and welfare advice to the vulnerable and those most in need:

As with every Law Centre, we are having to deal with a massive reduction in our income due to the Government’s Legal Aid cuts. However, unlike most Law Centres, we receive no funding from the local authority.

If we close, it will have a devastating effect upon advice services available in the city. We are alarmed that this comes at a time of increasing personal debt and dramatic changes to the benefits system that will see an increase in homelessness, reduction in real terms incomes and a greater reliance on food banks or other charitable support.

This is why we want Birmingham City Council to support its only Law Centre before it is too late.

There is an e-petition here to support the Birmingham Law Centre in its plea to the Council. Please make sure to show your support.

Thank you!

What’s in a name?

At the start of a new year, it seems fitting to look back in time to learn more about the origins of Digbeth.

Have you ever wondered what Digbeth means? Or even where the name Deritend comes from? Luckily we have William Dargue to help shed some light on the history of our little part of the world:

This city of a million people, and a million more near neighbours, is made up of many different geographical and social communities, all interlinked and interdependent. And this has always been the case.

Although population numbers diminish the further we go back in time, and geographical separation becomes greater, for thousands of years people like you and me have lived their lives in the area we now call Birmingham. Here you can investigate the meaning of the city’s place names and catch glimpses of its distant past. Hidden in these ancient names are clues about the preoccupations of our predecessors as they lived and laughed and toiled and travelled in a pre-industrial landscape.

Green Eyes Boutique

Digbeth is famous for its vintage shops, but Green Eyes Boutique is just a little bit different. Selling pre-owned, new and nearly new designer clothes, shoes and bags, plus hand-picked vintage wear from the 1950s to the 1990s, visiting could see you bag yourself a designer bargain!

Located on High Street Deritend, as well as their own stock, Green Eyes Boutique can also sell your unwanted designer/vintage wear on your behalf, with you receiving half the sale price. Sounds like an excellent idea!

Green Eyes Boutique also offer a wish list service; if you have been looking for that one special vintage designer item, let them know and you’ll get an email if something matching your description comes in.

‘Designer’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘expensive’, less so for residents of Digbeth, who are eligible for a 10% discount at Green Eyes Boutique! Simply show you are resident to claim.

Having recently featured in Grazia magazine, you can also read more about the Boutique on the Style Junkie blog. For more information and opening times, check out the Facebook page, or join the conversation on Twitter.
