Digbeth on photographic map

From Breaking Travel News:

Newcastle-upon-Tyne may be famous for its five bridges but Digbeth has been put on the photographic map with five arches. A photograph by Redditch photographer Gethin Thomas showing a series of five railway arches disappearing into the distance like the reflections in a mirror has been selected as runner up in a national photography competition.

The arches are located between Milk Street and Trent Street in Digbeth and carry the main rail lines in and out of Birmingham’s Moor Street station.

Gethin said: “The photo was taken on a walk around the old area of Digbeth in Birmingham and the view of all the arches receding was a lucky one as a few paces forward or back and I wouldn’t have noticed it when I looked right. I was also lucky with the light and the position of the sun which lit up all the interior parts of the arches.”

The Network Rail Lines in the Landscape award is part of the Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, which attracted more than 500 entries from across Britain. The best images from the competition will be displayed at a free exhibition at the National Theatre in London from 12 November, and will also appear in a book of the very best of this year’s entries.

Jo Kaye, Network Rail’s route managing director, said: “By far the majority of photographs entered in the Lines in the Landscape category were quite conventional, because they featured railway lines. Gethin’s entry was different because in this case, they were the architectural lines represented by the series of receding railway arches.”

It’s great to see our fair Digbeth put on the photographic map! Digbeth Residents Association extends our warmest congratulations to Gethin Thomas.

Coach Donation for SCCB

Students with Matt Beeton and Stuart Parker, National Express and Mike Hopkins, Principal of South and City College Birmingham

National Express has donated a coach to South and City College Birmingham to mark the launch of a new partnership agreement between the two organisations. The Mercedes coach will be used by the college to take students on trips around the UK and further afar.

The two organisations have led the regeneration of the Digbeth area with their respective investments in the new coach station and the extensive college campus. As close neighbours, they have been working together for several years to provide education, employment and training opportunities for the community.

The new partnership agreement will see the two organisations working more closely together. The college will provide National Express with expert and specialist training along with training to the local community which will enable them to take advantage of employment opportunities within the company.

Principal of the college, Mike Hopkins said: “We welcome this active partnership between National Express and the college. National Express is a very forward thinking organisation that is committed to supporting local people and we have a unique opportunity to work together to provide benefits for our local community, our workforce and our organisations as a whole.”

Enterprise Match

Digbeth’s iSE (initiative for Social Entrepreneurs) have been awarded an ESF grant by Birmingham and Black Country Community Foundation to support unemployed residents into work through a mixture of soft skill development, mentoring and work experience.

The project will aim to develop the skills of unemployed people living in Digbeth and parts of Highgate by linking them with work experience placements within local social enterprises, community groups, charities, small businesses and not-for profit organisations operating in the area. It is hoped that this project will not only help remove barriers to employment and assist local people to move closer to the labour market but also encourage residents to become more involved in their community.

Digbeth Residents Association is proud to support Enterprise Match. If you are a local organisation that wants to be involved in the project by offering work experience placements, please visit the iSE website to learn more. Equally, if you are an unemployed resident of Digbeth or Highgate that is keen to participate in this initiative, then please contact Kathy on 0121 771 1411 or Kathy.stein@i-se.co.uk.

Sofie’s Danish Film Night

When: Wednesday 28th November, 19:30 onwards
Where: The Spotted Dog, Warwick Street, Digbeth

The Spotted Dog‘s barmaid Sofie (pictured) has convinced the steely landlord to have a night of Danish films at his fair inn:

So. Danish Film Night at the Spotted Dog has been green-lit by none other than Spotted Dog Owner, John Tighe, so without further ado, I give you the two titles we’ll be watching on Wednesday, November 28 –

BLINKENDE LYGTER (FLICKERING LIGHTS).
Described as ‘both shocking and funny, violent and gentle’, Flickering Lights is a brand new kind of gangster comedy* about four childhood friends who, when dispatched by a mob boss to rob a diplomat, decide to keep the loot and head for Barcelona. Only, their van breaks down in the middle of rural Denmark.

I KINA SPISER DE HUNDE (IN CHINA THEY EAT DOGS).
Meet Arvid, a regular bank clerk, whose life changes radically when he knocks out bank robber Franz with his squash racket – not least because, a few days later, Franz’ wife shows up at Arvid’s doorstep, lamenting that they needed that money for IVF. Feeling guilty, Arvid turns to his criminal brother Harald for help. The plan? To rob a money transport. The outcome? A whole lot bloodier, not to mention far more complicated than that.

Both films are written by Academy award winner Anders Thomas Jensen, whose style has been described as a cross between Tarantino and The Coen Brothers*.

* Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for grander bits in these descriptions. This is what it says on the back of the DVDs.

Taste of Digbeth

Local photographer, Paul Beale, recently undertook a project entitled Taste of Digbeth. The project required Paul to select six images out of hundreds of possibilities to introduce Digbeth.

Image: Paul Beale

I’ve chosen to take the title literally and go with the idea of food and drink. A lot of the iconic companies that once occupied the area have since left the Digbeth, but the buildings are still here.

After initial research, I went out for a walk around Digbeth to see the buildings I’d chosen to use as subjects. I was looking for was good viewpoints, but also to see what state the buildings were in and how well they have stood the test of time.

The buildings chosen for the project are:

  • Birds Custard Factory
  • Typhoo Tea Factory
  • Geest Banana Warehouse
  • The Bond – Tansley’s Ice Storage
  • The Old Crown Public House
  • RTP Crisp Manufacturer

My plan is to process the images in black and white or sepia tones, as this conjures up a sense of nostalgia.

To learn more about Paul’s project, and to see all the photos for yourself, visit his blog here.

Safety and security in Digbeth

There was a spate of robberies in Digbeth at the end of October. Thankfully this seems to have been a case of isolated activity, but Digbeth Residents Association want to ensure that potential thieves are not provided with the opportunity to cause damage and distress to any residents again.

All the residential blocks in Digbeth have secure access code protected entrances. However, these are only effective if residents do not share the access codes or allow others to ‘tail-gate’ them into their homes.

Working with West Midlands Police, DRA is promoting a simple set of five rules for residents to follow to keep our community safe:

  1. When you are leaving your residence, ensure that all doors are closed securely behind you.
  2. Ensure to lock all doors and windows when you are not at home – an opportunist thief only needs 30 seconds to cause distress.
  3. Report any suspicious behaviour or individuals to West Midlands Police immediately – the safety of our community is not a waste of their time! Contact details are available here.
  4. If you are not at home, don’t advertise this to potential thieves. Use timer switches on lights, or leave a radio on to deter any potential trouble-makers.
  5. Last but not least, do not let anyone follow you in to your block! If they are a genuine visitor, they should not need to tail-gate anyone in. Treat the shared access door as the entrance to your home – you wouldn’t allow a stranger to follow you into your living room, so don’t let them in to your block either!

We urge all residents to stay vigilant to help keep our Digbeth community protected from harm. If anyone saw suspicious behaviour on Bradford Street on Tuesday 30th October between 14:15-15:15, please do get in touch. You can contact DRA anonymously on contact@mydigbeth.co.uk, or call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111.

Stay safe Digbeth!
