PROVIDE Paper

Boutique shop PROVIDE opened in the Custard Factory back in September 2012, with a limited edition run of their own free newspaper. Perhaps not surprisingly, the paper ‘sold out’ quite quickly, but if you missed out, it’s now available to view online:

One of the reasons PROVIDE began was to buck the trend of creative people having the inspiration and enthusiasm sucked out of them by corporate jobs. There’s a decent chance that at some point in your life someone has tried to disuade you from following your dreams, because whatever it is that you love to do is not a sensible career option. PROVIDE is here to offer an alternative opinion, encouragement to do what makes you feel alive, and opportunities to share your passions with others.

We publish a newspaper semi-regularly with the sole aim of providing a platform for creative people to share their work. Our hope is that even if you’re currently in a job you hate, you’ll enjoy creating something truly ‘you’ for the paper. Who knows, maybe seeing your work in print will plant thoughts in your mind about what might happen if you paid more attention to what your soul wants to do.

ASOS move to Digbeth

Image: Business Birmingham

In a coup for Digbeth, online fashion retailer ASOS is opening a new office at The Custard Factory – its first regional office outside the South East – planned to be operational before the end of April.

ASOS is keen to take advantage of Birmingham’s digital sector talent pool and our growing specialism in e-commerce through the recruitment of 20 senior positions, focussing on European expansion of the company’s websites. The number of roles in Birmingham could rise to around 50 over the next year.

In a 2011 study by eBay, Birmingham was named the UK’s fastest growing e-commerce city, with more than 1,000 new businesses established between 2008 and 2011, such as Droplet, contributing over £18 million to the local economy.

This is fantastic news for The Custard Factory, Digbeth, and indeed Birmingham as a whole!

National Vintage Awards

With a plethora of vintage shops, Digbeth really is a haven for lovers of loved-before goods. The Custard Factory boasts many emporia of vintage boutiques and shops, some with great pioneering attitudes towards what ‘vintage’ means and can do.

It’s therefore fitting that the first ever National Vintage Awards will be taking place in Digbeth, with the support of Digbeth-based vintage dealers. The awards will be taking place on Thursday 24th June, and will celebrate the small, independent businesses that keep the vintage scene alive.

All businesses who nominate themselves before 31st March will go up for the public vote. Voting opens in May 2013 and businesses who are short listed for an award will be announced in early June. For more information about the awards, and how to nominate your business, visit the website here.

Crave

Crave has just opened at the Custard Factory, and as the UK’s first unisex full aesthetic boutique, the owners certainly have Digbeth’s pioneering attitude!

Offering everything from tanning to tattoos, hair styling to hot stone therapy, the team behind Crave really do cover all the bases. In addition, the all-black boutique with its state of the art technology lends itself to an unforgettable experience. One half of the salon boasts gadgetry, tattoos and piercing, whereas the other half, The Boudoir, is dedicated to relaxation and pampering heaven.

To celebrate the launch, Crave are offering a number of introductory offers and giveaways: there’s a goody bag from the very talented Bits and Bows with every beauty treatment, and Digbeth residents get 10% off all piercing and beauty treatments, so make sure you pop in and meet the team!

To redeem your discount as a resident of Digbeth, simply show a recent utility/credit card bill at the boutique. For more information about Crave, visit their Facebook or Twitter pages. If you’d like to make a booking, call 0121 224 7505 or email bookings@thisiscrave.com.
