Venue for Meetings
The Digbeth Residents Association (DRA) has traditionally held meetings in the Paragon Hotel, where a room has been provided for our use, free of charge, for over three years.
Recently, however, the Paragon has undergone a change in Management, who now refuse to continue this gesture of goodwill. As such, the DRA has had a £50 fee levied for use of a meeting room for the past three meetings.
Huge thanks go to our partners Planning Aid for covering the cost of the January meeting, and our recently departed (and very much missed) Neighbourhood Manager Andy Sheppard for using the remains of his budget to pay for the meetings in February and March.
As a group consisting entirely of volunteers, DRA has no funds from which to draw upon to pay for meeting facilities. This leaves us stuck. There are few non-alcoholic spaces available for us to meet in, and meeting in a public house would undermine the strong relationships we have built up in the community.
For example, the Police have recently been in contact to say that it is a priority for them to be present at future meetings of DRA. This is great news, and proof that active local residents working together with key public services can foster relationships that greatly improve the ambience of an area.
Essentially, this post is a call for help. If you can help with providing meeting facilities for DRA (meetings take place on the first Monday of the month at 7pm) please do get in touch, either by email or by commenting on this post.
If you are a disgruntled local resident who wants to appeal to the Paragon against their decision, please find contact details below:
