Whatnot & Doodah

Having started from decoupaging furniture at home and selling it on eBay, Whatnot & Doodah owner Tanya Gillon realised she needed more space to work and moved into a friend’s unit.

However, when she was asked to be the sole Birmingham stockist of Annie Sloan’s signature Chalk Paint, Tanya knew she had to open a store, and so Whatnot & Doodah launched in the Zellig Building at the Custard Factory in July 2013.

Tanya brings old and unloved furniture back to life in her own inimitable style using many techniques, describing her style as ‘urban’ as opposed to shabby chic:

I’ll often sit and look at a piece of furniture for a while until the penny drops and I know what I’ll do with it. I take my inspiration from aged and worn buildings that are crumbling and peeling. I love all that, and graffiti.
