Police officers, PCSOs and local street wardens across Birmingham city centre are celebrating the start of the new lunar year by learning Mandarin thanks to local funding.

The course at the Chinese Community Centre – Birmingham, based in Digbeth, will give them the opportunity to listen, speak, read and write in Mandarin and learn more about Chinese cultures and traditions. Officers hope that this will improve relationships and encourage a better understanding of how members of the community can report both crime and anti-social behaviour to the police.

In addition to the language course, funding has been obtained to enable West Midlands Police to print community safety literature and signage in Chinese, so residents may see more Mandarin around Digbeth in future, which can only be a good thing considering the substantial local Chinese community in our area.
